An interstate move puts more on the line than a move across town, and the company you choose matters more because of it. Before you sign anything, there are a handful of things worth confirming.
Credentials That Actually Matter
Any mover crossing state lines is required to carry a USDOT number, and that number should be verifiable, not just printed on the estimate. Ask how long the company has held it. A mover that's operated under the same number for years has a track record you can actually check.
Binding vs. Non-Binding Estimates
A binding estimate locks in the terms up front, based on an accurate inventory. A non-binding estimate can shift once the crew is loading your belongings, which is where surprises happen. Ask directly which type you're being offered, and get it in writing either way.
What a Legitimate Mover Won't Do
- Demand a large deposit before the move, especially in cash.
- Show up in an unmarked truck with no company name or DOT number visible.
- Refuse to provide a written inventory before loading.
- Give you a quote without ever seeing what you're moving.
