A cross-country move has a longer runway than a local one, and most of what makes it go smoothly happens weeks before the truck shows up.
Start earlier than feels necessary
Begin planning at least two months out. Book your moving date as early as you can, since the best dates on any long-distance crew's calendar go first. A moving checklist built around that timeline keeps the smaller tasks, like changing your address or transferring utilities, from piling up at the end.
Decluttering pays off twice
A cross-country move is the natural point to get rid of what you don't need. Donate, sell, or toss items you haven't used in the last year. Less to pack means less to load, less to unload, and less to unpack in a new place you haven't organized yet.
Pack for a multi-day trip
If you're packing yourself, use real moving boxes and enough cushioning to survive several days on a truck, not just a short drive. Label every box by room and contents. If that sounds like more than you want to take on, our packing services handle it, boxes and materials included.
Keep essentials with you, not on the truck
Pack a separate bag with medications, chargers, a change of clothes, and any documents you'll need before the truck arrives. Keep a written inventory of what's on the truck so you can check it against what actually shows up.
Confirm delivery details before moving day
Nail down your estimated delivery window with your mover, and if possible, schedule utilities and internet at the new place before you arrive. Once your things do arrive, inspect everything before the crew leaves, then unpack the essentials first and take the rest at your own pace.
