Chicago is around 2,000 miles from San Diego, a drive that typically runs three to four days for a loaded moving truck. It's one of the longer routes we run, crossing desert, mountains, and plains before reaching Lake Michigan, so the planning matters as much as the packing.
Hulk Movers has handled long-distance relocations from San Diego since 2019. We quote the route in advance, tell you a real delivery window, and keep the same crew on your shipment from pickup to drop-off.
Chicago's climate is a genuine adjustment coming from San Diego: real winters with snow and ice, humid summers, and weather that actually changes the moving calendar. If you have flexibility, spring and fall tend to be easier windows than the depths of winter, when snow removal and street parking rules complicate a move-in.
Housing in Chicago also differs from what you're used to: vintage two-flats and courtyard buildings with narrow entries, walk-up apartments without elevators in many neighborhoods, and alley-loading in areas like Lincoln Park and Wicker Park where the garage and trash pickup sit behind the building rather than street-side. Downtown high-rises usually require a certificate of insurance and a scheduled freight elevator window, which we coordinate with building management ahead of delivery.
Full packing makes the most sense for a route this long. It reduces handling and keeps items secure over multiple days on the highway. We also coordinate with building management in advance if you're moving into a high-rise, so the freight elevator and loading dock are reserved before the truck arrives.
Typically three to four driving days, depending on route and load size. We'll confirm a delivery window before pickup.
Many downtown buildings require it, along with a certificate of insurance from the moving company. Give us your building's move-in policy in advance and we'll handle the paperwork and scheduling.
Spring and fall generally avoid the worst of winter snow and summer humidity, though we run this route year-round. If your dates are flexible, it's worth considering.
Not usually, but we do ask about alley width and loading zones ahead of time so we bring the right size vehicle and avoid a last-minute scramble.
