Planning a long-distance move
Long-distance moves take more lead time than local ones, mostly because there's less room to fix a problem once the truck is loaded and on the road. A little planning ahead of time makes the actual moving day much easier.
A rough timeline
- Six to eight weeks out: get an estimate and book your mover, especially if the move falls during a busy season
- Four weeks out: start decluttering room by room, so you're not paying to move things you don't want anymore
- Two weeks out: confirm packing services if you're using them, and start collecting boxes if you're not
- Moving week: pack a separate bag with essentials, documents, and anything you'll need before the truck arrives at the new place
What tends to go wrong without a plan
The most common issues aren't dramatic. Boxes get labeled vaguely, essentials end up packed at the bottom of the truck, and furniture that needed disassembly gets left for the last minute. None of that is hard to avoid, it just needs to happen before moving day instead of during it.
