Confirm the Basics
- USDOT number. Any company that handles moves crossing state lines is required to carry one. It should be posted on their trucks and easy to find on their website.
- Proof of insurance. Ask for it directly. A company that hesitates to provide proof of insurance is telling you something.
- A physical address. A real office or yard, not just a phone number and a website, is a basic sign of a business built to last.
Read Past the Star Rating
A 4.8-star average tells you almost nothing on its own. Read a dozen recent reviews and look for how the company responded when something went wrong, not just how many five-star reviews they've collected. Consistency across Google, Yelp, and other platforms matters more than the number on any single site.
Ask About the Estimate
A mover who wants to see your home, or at least a detailed list of what you're moving, before giving you a number is doing it right. An estimate given over the phone with no questions asked is a red flag worth taking seriously.
