The Ultimate San Diego Moving Checklist

A move is easier to manage when you break it into stages instead of tackling it all in the final week. Here's the timeline we walk our own customers through, from the first booking call to settling into a new San Diego neighborhood.

Six to eight weeks out

Start by booking your moving company. San Diego movers get busy in spring and summer, so locking in a date early gives you more flexibility on timing. This is also the right time to start decluttering room by room. Anything you haven't used in the last year is a candidate to donate, sell, or toss before it ever gets packed.

Three to four weeks out

Order packing supplies and start with the rooms you use least, like a guest bedroom or storage closet. Notify utility companies of your move date so service can be scheduled to start at your new place and stop at your old one. If you're moving into an apartment or condo, check with the building now about elevator reservations or a certificate of insurance requirement.

One to two weeks out

Finish packing everything except what you'll need in the final days. Confirm your moving date and arrival window with your crew, and if you're on a street with limited parking, arrange a spot for the truck. Set aside valuables and important documents to travel with you rather than on the truck.

Moving day

Do a final walkthrough of every room, including closets and cabinets, before the crew leaves. Keep your essentials bag with you: chargers, medications, a change of clothes, and anything else you'd want within reach on night one. At the new place, do a walkthrough with your movers before they leave so any questions about placement get answered on the spot.

After the move

Update your address with the DMV, your bank, and anywhere else that needs your current information. Take a little time to explore your new neighborhood, whether that's finding the closest grocery store or figuring out which freeway on-ramp actually saves you time during rush hour. For a more detailed breakdown of what to do in the final days before your movers show up, see our guide on preparing for movers.

Hulk Movers has helped San Diego families and businesses move since 2019, and we build a plan around your specific timeline rather than a generic checklist. If you're ready to book, reach out and we'll help you map out the weeks ahead.
